Description

Join us on an unforgettable experience in and around Sax-Zim Bog. Notorious for wintering owls, but also supporting a cadre of birds that depend upon the unique habitat, Sax-Zim Bog will be the featured location on this trip. Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Snowy Owl and if we are lucky, Boreal Owl will be highlights (and uniquely convenient for photographers). While looking for these famed birds, we will likely cross paths with Spruce Grouse, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Bohemian Waxwing, Redpoll, and Pine Grosbeak which can be obvious at this time of year because of limited foraging opportunities.

The weather will likely be cold, but time afield can be limited by making best use of the vans. The forest roads can be surveyed from the warmth of the vans, and participants are welcome to retreat to the vans if elements get the best of us. A single hotel stay in Duluth simplifies trip logistics and local restaurants offer hot meals to break up the day.
